Upgrade/Update
to ACT! 6.03.979 Gold
- the latest release of ACT!
Read
carefully for recommended installation procedures.
We
are currently
recommending a full "fresh-start" protocol for
those already using ACT! 6
and earlier version of ACT!, which includes multiple
preparation steps before the update is
installed including
Uninstalling and Re-installing ACT! a full version of
ACT!, not merely applying the 6.03 Update.
Before doing anything take a backup of all ACT! databases
and documents and any other attachments that you could
later need. Check in ACT! "Help | About" to see
which build you already have.
-
First,
you will uninstall your existing version of ACT! To
do so, close all running programs. Be sure to disable any
anti-virus software that may be running on the computer.
Note: On Windows XP, 2000, and NT 4.0 computers,
you must be logged in to Windows as a local administrator
to properly install or uninstall software.
-
Click the Windows
Start button, point to Programs, then to ACT!, and finally
click Uninstall. (On earlier versions of ACT! 5.0 or 2000,
you may need to point to Programs, then to Symantec, next
to ACT!, and finally click Uninstall.) Click
Yes in response to "Do you wish to continue
uninstalling ACT!?" Complete
the uninstall process.
-
Remove
any leftover files:
- Right-click
the Windows Start button, and then click Explore on
the shortcut menu. Windows Explorer opens.
- Browse to the
ACT! installation folder. This is usually
"C:\Program Files\ACT," though it may be
"C:\Program Files\Symantec\ACT" or some
other custom path.
- In the right
pane of Windows Explorer, check to see if there are
any files remaining in the ACT! folder. If there are,
move the files--do not just copy them--to a backup
folder of your choice. Do not delete any of the yellow
subfolders or their contents.
- Tip: A
quick alternative is to rename the old ACT!
installation folder so that the reinstallation of ACT!
will not conflict with any files left behind. To do
this, right-click on the ACT! installation folder, and
then click Rename on the shortcut menu. Rename the
folder to "Old ACT", and then press ENTER.
- Restart Windows
-
Uninstall
any ACT! add-ons (be sure to speak with the vendor to tell
them you may require a new serial numbers)
-
Search
and delete all ~*.*, *.tmp, *.snc, *.unq from all hard
drives
-
This
is not an absolute requirement but optional.
Run Norton SystemWorks 2003 "WinDoctor"
to clean out all old links, etc. Usually a good time to run LiveUpdate, then
repair/optimize using DiskFix and SpeedDisk, too, if you
don't have this tool then at least settle with running
scandisk and defrag.
-
Install
the current gold full-release copy of ACT! 6.03.979
Select All Users when given the choice.
-
Reboot
the machine
-
Open
your database, login as a user with Administrator rights
& Set user
preferences for your
database properly.
-
Reinstall
any ACT addons removed in step 4.
-
Check
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsupdate for critical
updates, if any, apply, then reboot and TEST current
install.
-
Test/set
email preferences and signature
-
Test
add-ons.
-
Run
ACTDIAG,
Turn Off Opps Locking > Reboot > then run ACTdiag to Scan
and Repair to your Master database.
Re-open the database to rebuild the index files.
-
If
you are synching with other users then carry out the same
above process to their machines and receive and apply a full
synch from all remote users.
-
Check
your database for and fix any duplicate or blank records,
(Tools > scan for duplicates), resolve any bizarre field
definitions for example auto-add to Company Field Title
2nd title and 3rd title drop-downs. Eliminate any groups
you no longer needed, and create the first blank group
(this makes the Groups feature load faster).
If
you are using any version of ACT! older than version 3 call us
before proceeding.
If
you need assistance in your update, please call our office,
770-205-6678, and we will be glad to support you in your
upgrade or install effort.
